Tips for Learning Urdu


I have always found my interest in learning new languages and from my experience I can tell there are no failures in it since you don’t have to appear for an exam or any test for that matter. For learning a language you should not start straight away for perfection though perfection is appreciated when you are done with the basics. You have to set small goals for learning language. By concentrating less on the grammar, you will do fine.

At first you must try to listen as much as possible the language you want to learn as it helps in developing a general sense and feel of the language. Utilize every possible time in an effort to learn a language. Let us consider if you want to learn Urdu.

You need to broaden your thinking and analyze every phrase not the individual phrase.
Using imagination and visually relating words will help you in remembering words better.
You can develop a story and then translate it from your native language to Urdu using the vocabulary you have till that time. Listening to the internet radio broadcasts and podcasts really helps.
If you are movie fan just go to store near you bring in some documentaries and movies in Urdu you’ll be learning a lot while enjoying a good movie as well. For listening to news in Urdu, BBC Urdu broadcasts can help. You can also use a bilingual dictionary mostly, for not just looking for the specific words but for browsing it through as well. Use this strategy, make two columns right words of your native language in one and its corresponding words in Urdu in the other column. This allows your eye to scan very easily to one column to next and it also helps your brain for absorbing that particular word. You can certainly use computer programs and various free online dictionaries for learning Urdu language. Also try to read online Urdu newspapers like daily express. Do not get discouraged by committing mistake, this will happen in the beginning. Read the grammar books for making your concepts clear about the Urdu language. Last not the least start to think in Urdu.
